About Newcastle Upon Tyne Teachers' Association
Newcastle upon Tyne NUT is a single association division of the National Union of Teachers. It serves the teachers who work in
Newcastle schools. The NUT is the biggest and best teachers union in the country, and it has the largest representation of teachers
in Newcastle schools, with over 1500 members in all sectors of education, from Nursery Education to 16 plus, including Head Teachers
and LEA advisors.
Our local officers will help any Newcastle member with advice. Secretary Ian
Grayson is trained and experienced in dealing with the many and varied school-related issues which concern members on a
day to day basis; workload, stress, conditions of service, Fixed Term Contracts, salaries, ill-health, parental complaints, disciplinary
matters, threats of redundancy, school re-organisations and many more. No other union can offer an equivalent level of support.
Our Northern Regional Office at Chester-le-Street provides additional specialist support in the fields of maternity leave, long-term
sickness, pensions advice, legal problems and industrial tribunals. Ours is the only union with its own specialist team of Regional
Solicitors. Further support with local, as well as national issues is available from our Head Office in London.
As a member of Newcastle upon Tyne NUT you automatically gain all the benefits and services of belonging to a powerful National Union
which represents the majority of teachers in England and Wales. You can keep up-to-date on national education issues, such as our
campaign to abolish SATs, and our continuing struggle to preserve teaching as an all-graduate profession faced with the Government’s
remodelling agenda, by reading The Teacher and by looking at the national website teachers.org.uk.
The National Union of Teachers is a democratic organisation, whose strength relies in representing the views of all its members. Local
officers are indebted to individual members in individual schools. The importance of the school representative’s role can never be
underestimated. We hold training sessions for local school reps which act as an important conduit for giving and receiving information.
The Newcastle Association holds annual elections for local officers and an executive committee, which is responsible for making policy
decisions within the rules of the National Union. These elections take place in January, before the Annual General Meeting. There are four
other general meetings in the year to which all members are invited. The Executive Committee meets every month.
The NUT is fully represented on all relevant education forums, where it always puts forward the views of the Union on national issues
such as remodelling and workload, as well as negotiating with the LEA on local implementation of national initiatives, and on ensuring
that members have their employment rights protected and are not threatened with redundancy during these times of seemingly
continual re-organisation of schools in Newcastle.
